1985-86 Mercury Capri

1985,86 Mercury Capri stereo removal instructions to help you remove your radio fast!

Radio Removal:1)Open the armrest glove box and remove (4) screws in the bottom of the glove box.
2)Remove (2) screws at the forward edge securing the hand brake trim.  Remove the trim.
NOTE: There may be (2) additional screws below this trim on some cars.
3)Unsnap the gear lever trim from the front, slide it forward, and remove it.
4)Open the ashtray and remove one screw from each side.  Pull the ashtray / lighter trim up and disconnect the wires.
5)Remove (4) screws from below the ashtray and pull the console up.  Disconnect the wiring harness and remove the console.
6)Remove (2) screws above the radio face and (1) screw from below the radio.  Pull out the radio and disconnect the wires, then slide the radio towards the front of the car and out the back of the cavity

The 2 main things you will need when installing your new stereo is a wiring adapter and a dash kit.

Wiring Adapter

The wiring adapter is a piece which has a plug on one end and wiring sticking out of the other end. The plug connects to the factory wiring, and the wires are connected to the matching color wiring on the new stereo. This allows for connecting a new stereo without having to cut the factory wires.

Stock stereos have varying sizes, and if you just place an aftermarket stereo in the hole left by a stock stereo then there will be gaps around the stereo. The dash kit is a plastic piece which fits into the hole left by the stock stereo and fills in the gaps between the aftermarket stereo and the dash.
